Workshop Wednesday: Math Edition!

The wonderful Jivey has started her own linky in the last couple of weeks. I've been reading up on everyone's ideas, but I haven't had much to contribute until this week. I primarily teach math, so as soon as I saw the math game link up I was all in!

In my math class, I teach from a pullout setting. There two children for every adult in the room. So we have small group work often, and plenty of teachers to offer help and advice. On Friday's we have "game days" or center rotations... ALWAYS! My students often have retention problems, so the ability to review concepts in a fun way is important.

Donna, from Math Coach's Corner, is absolutely amazing. I know I've talked about her centers and lessons before, but they have made a huge impact for my students. She follows CRA (concrete, representational, and abstract.) Here are a couple of the items I have  downloaded for free (and love) in my room; check out her paid items as well. I own several and they are great too!

The next item comes from a measurement unit. Conversions can be tricky. This dice game was a freebie that I found and the kids actually started to truly get the hang of conversions through playing. Another teacher in the building with high math, upped the amount of gallons you needed to make, and I think used a die with more sides, so the students really had to think.

Last, but not least, an unashamed plug for myself. Just after the New Year I started playing around to make things for my classroom and fell in love with how fun it was. {Something so great about handing out materials I have made myself to my students to use. Especially when they make a difference in their learning.}

First up are multiplication centers.

Answer & Compare activity, Differentiated Math Hide & Seek, Original Bum and 7 others with a twist, and Bingo to help solidify basic multiplication facts.

Next, centers to review several concepts with a camping theme. I have several students who are in scouts and others who enjoy camping out and time at the lake, they loved the theme.

Addition/Subtraction with and without regrouping match up, analyzing the products from basic multiplication problems, comparing decimals, rounding to the 10,000's place, and 2 digit by 2 digit match up.

Last, place value centers. This is a concept that my students still struggle with, and I'm beginning to throw more of these into our weekly rotations.

Differentiated Place Value Sorting Mats, Standard/Written/Expanded Form Sort, Build a Number,  Place Value I Have/Who Has, Build the Biggest/Smallest, Place Value Race game.

With that, I'm off to try and find some more materials to stock up my classroom with. If you have any math games to share, please link up! Be sure to follow Jessica, as she will post each week's topic every Monday!

  5. I love the games you created - especially the camping themed one. I do a Camp Learned-A-Lot theme at the end of the year, and that will definitely be included this year!
